Community-based Mentoring

Mentor Denton partners with Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) to give volunteers opportunities to mentor one-to-one with youth from Denton ISD. While becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister involves an in-depth application process and requires a greater commitment level than the other Mentor Denton options, mentoring as a Big Brother or Sister allows you the opportunity to get to know your Little or mentee outside of school. Bigs and Littles can meet after school hours on weekdays or on the weekends depending on you and your Little’s availability. Mentors of Big Brothers Big Sisters are provided monthly professional support and local discounts and activity ideas to make it easy to get to know your Little and have fun!

BBBS has over 150 Littles on their waitlist waiting for a role model and mentor in the community. Being a mentor is as simple as being one more person in a child’s life to listen, encourage, and empower them to be their very best. Mentors improve grades, self-esteem, and help a child achieve higher goals. Become a Big Brother or Big Sister TODAY!

Volunteer Requirements: Every Big and Little is expected to engage in 2-4 activities a month in order to develop a healthy and beneficial friendship for at least 1 year or more. However, Bigs and Littles have the option to continue in the program until the Little graduates high school or turns 18 years old.

WHAT IS REQUIRED TO BE A COMMUNITY-BASED MENTOR WITH BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS:

  • Be at least 18 years old and graduated from high school
  • Complete this application
  • Submit a copy of your Texas driver’s license and auto insurance ID card to voluneer@bbbstx.org after completing your application.
  • Pass reference checks
  • Pass background check
  • Interview with BBBS staff
  • Complete online pre-match training
  • Attend official Match Introduction meeting with BBBS staff, the student, and the student's parent/guardian

Depending on when you submit your application, you can expect the process to take about 2 months, but the relationship can last for life!
